Where We Are
Antella
Antella is a small village about 10 kilometers southeast of Florence, and our ‘Casa al Vento' is about 500 meters from the Piazza, the main square. It is a short but steep walk down or up, particularly in the summer. Its name comes from the Etruscan, ‘Anital' and ruins of a Roman country villa (around 1st century BC) confirm Antella's long history.
The town grew around its church, the Pieve of Santa Maria (12th century) and became an important market town with a large flour mill which was active until the 1900's. The Renaissance Medici family commissioned the country villas of Mondeggi, Lappeggi and Lilliano in Antella.
Today the ‘Piazza' is still a meeting point for all, with family-run shops offering a little bit of everything. As a matter of fact, people say that some of the best ice cream in all of the Florence area is made right in the Piazza!
